Australian Travel Education Program (ATEP)

Careers & Education :: ATEP

Welcome to the Australian Travel Education Program!

The ATEP Program is a Travel and Tourism Career Development Program which is operated by AFTA Education and Training. The program contains several AFTA training modules which are produced by AFTA Education and Training to promote the development of professional travel expertise and to assist you in your career.

These training materials support achievement of competency standards from the nationally-endorsed SIT07 Training Package for Tourism, Hospitality and Events. They address competencies towards the following qualifications:

• SIT20107 Certificate II in Tourism
• SIT30207 Certificate III in Tourism (Retail Travel Sales)

The AFTA Modules have recently undergone an extensive update with the assistance of a team of writers, travel industry specialists and academics to meet the requirements of the National Training Package (SIT07) and to provide specific knowledge that reflects current industry practices.

Some of the AFTA Modules would also support units of competency in tourism qualifications from other industry sectors such as Tour Operations, Wholesale or Guiding.

Refer to National Training Information Service Website www.ntis.gov.au for details on Training Package SIT30207 Certificate III in Tourism (Retail Travel Sales).

AFTA Modules Structure
Each module provides instructional material for classroom use by Registered Training Organisations and for distance learning through the AFTA External Studies Program.

The instructional material contains information about the subject area organised into several topics. Each topic contains activities to assist with learning, and a self-testing exercise to enable you to test your knowledge of some of the material presented. Answers to Activities are provided at the end of each topic. For answers to the self-testing exercises and assessments, please refer to your trainer/assessor.

Assessments are also provided at the back of each module to assess your competency in the relevant units, as explained in the Assessments section below.

Assessments
Inserted at the back of each module you will find an Assessments section. The Assessments have been designed to address the requirements of the relevant SIT07 Units of Competency for each module. Your assessor will provide you with details of the particular assessments you will be required to do. They may consist of practical assignments or projects, research exercises, role plays or case studies, plus a knowledge test.

Successful completion of the assessments will enable candidates to achieve the units of competency, leading towards a certificate.

The AFTA Industry Exams
The AFTA Exams are an additional, quality, Industry Assessment which are conducted by AFTA Education and Training and are offered through all the AFTA Colleges Australia-wide. These exams are optional for Non-AFTA Colleges and other Training Centres. The AFTA Industry Exams are designed to promote the development of professional travel expertise and to assist you with your career.

If your College has subscribed to the AFTA Industry Exams, your assessor will advise you when you will be sitting the examinations. Inserted at the back of each module is a Sample Exam which will help you prepare for the actual Industry Exams.

Exam questions vary according to the nature of the module. Most exams contain a variety of short answer style questions. The exceptions to this are the airfares modules which require you to calculate fares. All exams are ‘Closed Book’ except for the four Airfare exams – Domestic Airfares, Normal International Airfares, Promotional International Airfares and Advanced International Airfares, which are ‘Open Book’.

With Closed Book examinations you may not take any training material or notes into the examination. With the Airfares Open Book examinations you may take your training module/s, your notes and the appropriate Fares Manual into the examination.

AFTA Industry Exam Procedures for applicable Registered Training Organisations
Colleges who register their students for the Industry Exams must hold the exams under full examination conditions and procedures. Resits are available – these are to be arranged through your college. Any impropriety on behalf of any individual student, class, trainer, assessor or College with respect to the examinations may result in the cancellation of the exam results for the student(s) involved. The student(s) would then be required to resit the examination for the module(s) involved.
