What the different states doing to stimulate the economy?

The various State Governments have begun to announce details of their economic stimulus packages and AFTA is pleased to provide members with an easy to read and informative update on what the Government is doing to stimulate the economy.

These new packages are on top of the $17.6 billion Federal Government economic stimulus package, already announced by Prime Minister, The Hon Scott Morrison MP, and are designed to support households and businesses in the wake of COVID-19.

If you are a NSW business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • Businesses with payrolls of up to $10 million will have their payroll tax waived for the remainder of the financial year (to 30 June 2020). This means these businesses will save a quarter of their annual payroll tax bill in 2019-20.
  • The payroll tax threshold limit has been lifted to $1 million for the next financial year.

If you are a QLD business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • A six-month payroll tax deferral, backdated to 1 February 2020, to all affected businesses across the state with wage bills up to $6.5 million.
  • The Government will waive certain fees and charges for small to medium enterprises in the tourism or hospitality industries.

If you are a WA business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • Small to medium businesses with a payroll of between $1 million and $4 million will receive a one-off grant of $17,500.
  • Changes to be made to the payroll tax exemption threshold will be brought forward from 1 July 2020, with the threshold lifted to $1 million.
  • Small businesses which pay less than $7.5 million in taxable wages each year can apply to defer their payroll tax payment to July 21, 2020.

If you are a NT business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • The opportunity to apply for a $10,000 Business Improvement Scheme government matched payment, aimed at helping businesses get customers back. Any upgrades and purchases must be from another Territory business, and could include buying new equipment, new fit outs and physical changes to attract customers.
  • The freezing of electricity prices for small and medium businesses from 1 July 2020 (no increase due to indexation) until 1 July 2021.

If you are a TAS business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • Businesses with payrolls of up to $5 million will be able to apply to have their payroll tax waived for April to June 2020.
  • More time to pay Tasmanian Government bills, with extended payment terms from 30 days to 90 days.
  • Access to the Targeted Small Business Grants Program, providing a $5,000 grant for businesses that hire an apprentice or trainee.

If you are VIC Business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • Full payroll tax refunds for the 2019-20 financial year to small and medium-sized businesses with payroll of less than $3 million 
  • The option for small and medium-sized businesses to defer any payroll tax for the first three months of the 2020/21 financial year until 1 January 2021
  • The ability to apply for rent relief if you are commercial tenant in a government building
  • The option for eligible small businesses to defer 2020 land tax payments

If you are an ACT business, key announcements to support your business include:

  • A rebate on the fixed charge for 2019-20 on commercial rates for properties with an AUV below $2 million will be provided, which specifically targets businesses who own their own premises
  • The ability for eligible small businesses to apply for a $750 rebate to their next electricity bill
  • Access to interest free deferrals of payroll tax commencing 1 July 2020 for all businesses up to a payroll threshold of $10 million, to ease the cashflow pressure for medium sized businesses
