5 Tips to kickstart your Christmas savings Qantas logo

It will probably shock you, but it’s only a couple of months until Christmas! Before you panic with visions of fighting your way through shopping centres and overpaying for last minute gifts, stop and take a deep breath... We have some ideas and suggestions to help you save time and money this Christmas.

Here are our top 5 tips to help you sail through Christmas this year:

1. Yes, it’s not too late to put money aside!

Set up an auto transfer from each payday and send a portion to a ‘Christmas Savings Account’ with no card attached – this will stop you dipping in to your savings (by accident of course). If you are one of the lucky ones who are paid weekly or fortnightly, $50 or even $100 each pay is really going to make a difference come December.

2. Write your list and check it twice

Compile a list of everyone you need to purchase for and set a limit for each person. This list will save you on a couple of fronts, a) You’ll know how much you need to budget for; and b) If you know your limits before hitting the shops it will keep you on track when it comes time to buy.

3. Start stocking your stockings early

Once you’ve completed your list you should think about shopping now. Stats show that the later you leave your shopping the more you’ll spend per gift. So take your time now, research online and find the best deal. If you are shopping online it will also allow plenty of time for delivery.

4. Something for you, something for them

If you’re purchasing online have you thought about using a credit card with Qantas Frequent Flyer points? It’s a great way to shop accumulate extra points for yourself – just make sure you pay off the amount you spent each month. Check out our Visa Platinum Credit Card to find out how many points you could earn.

5. Homemade!

It’s becoming very popular now to create and gift, so before you start visualising grandma’s homemade jams and the kids cardboard Christmas decorations – think again. There are some great ideas circulating within online sites like Pinterest which will give you some clever and creative ideas for gifts which will be well-received – and will save you $$$.
