AFTA and members keep the pressure on for financial support

[12 October 2020:] The outstanding effort from members of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents to push for tailored financial support continues with 42 Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet Minsters briefed along with House of Representatives members and Senators.

The success of AFTA’s National Mobilisation Campaign saw the need for targeted support raised by 4 Members of Parliament at last week’s Joint Coalition Party Room, making it the most flagged issue of the meeting - Click here.

The agent activation campaign is in addition to AFTA’s direct lobbying which continues directly with the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the same time, AFTA has successfully partnered with News Corp, to tell the devastating reality of being at the frontline of travel in as many of its 120 local mastheads as possible. This is in addition to AFTA’s ongoing media campaign.

Multiple stories have already appeared as part of a wider sector support initiative including:

The Australian Federation of Travel Agents says the door is still open for financial support for travel agents, travel wholesalers and tour operators with negotiations with the Federal Government continuing.

Quotes from AFTA CEO Darren Rudd:
“AFTA is continuing to strategically and passionately put the case to Federal Government via an ongoing detailed, data-driven dialogue. Having members meet with their local Federal Representatives and lay bare the reality of homes being on the line, and businesses that were thriving pre-COVID on the precipice makes those conversations even more real.”

“The News Corporation support brings those conversations out into the open, making it very real and further ramping up awareness of the desperate need for immediate action if these businesses and the 40,000 Australians who work in them are going to get the support they need and deserve. We are incredibly grateful for News Corp’s support in shining the spotlight even more strongly on travel agents, wholesalers and tour operators.”

“The door is still open for Federal Government support. If you haven’t already contacted your local member of parliament, please do so as a matter of urgency. If you already have, contact them again and ask them for their continued support at this time when we need it most.”

“Everything you need to do this is on the AFTA website here.”
